What is a petit four?

Hailing from the French word meaning ‘small oven’, a petit four is a small confectionary treat covered in fondant. It is most commonly eaten at the end of a meal, or can even form part of dessert.

The word ‘biscuit’ comes from the Latin words ‘panem biscoctum’ which means bread twice baked. Etymologists claim that the word was originally spelt as ‘bisket’ from the 16th to 18th centuries. However, the way we spell it today comes from the modern French spelling, although without the French pronunciation.
